Corey A. Bauer

Overview

Corey Bauer is a business and intellectual property litigator and trial lawyer whose practice spans both traditional IP law and emerging technologies. His core practice areas include Business Litigation, Intellectual Property Litigation, Trade Secret Litigation, and Employment Law, complemented by specialized expertise in Artificial Intelligence Law, Data Privacy, and UAS/UAV (drone) technology.

As a litigation team lead, he handles complex disputes in state and federal courts, combining established IP experience with insight into emerging technology challenges. His extensive trial experience includes first and second-chair jury trials, first-chair arbitration, and numerous oral arguments before trial and appellate courts. He has taken and defended close to 100 depositions of fact and expert witnesses. Beyond litigation, he advises clients on comprehensive IP strategy, including traditional IP protection and emerging issues in AI implementation and data rights.

Corey brings unique expertise to matters involving autonomous systems and UAS/UAV (drone) technology. He represents clients in regulatory compliance, FAA investigations, and criminal actions relating to drone use, notably securing a defense verdict as solo trial counsel in a UAS-related felony ecoterrorism jury trial. He regularly contributes to the legal discourse on drone technology through speaking engagements and publications at both state and national levels.

His cybersecurity and privacy practice addresses both traditional and emerging challenges. He assists companies and municipalities with data privacy compliance, breach response, and social engineering/BEC fraud investigations, while also guiding clients through AI privacy frameworks and automated system security. His published works on cybersecurity and trade secrets appear in national publications, and his eDiscovery experience spans large-scale data disputes both domestically and internationally, including matters involving AI systems and traditional IP assets.

Experience

Represented Netflix in Copyright Litigation, successfully achieving a dismissal of the copyright claims via a Motion to Dismiss on Fair Use grounds.
Represented a DOE government contractor in defense of patent infringement claims resulting in a favorable settlement.
Represented a military government contractor in responding to a cybersecurity breach involving DPAS and ITAR-related notification requirements.
Represented real estate company in pre-litigation trade secret misappropriation investigation resulting in favorable pre-litigation settlement and complete protection of trade secrets.
Represented a large Washington D.C. engineering firm in the litigation and eventual re-negotiation of a multi-million-dollar default judgment and loan agreement.
Handled the defense of a Fortune 250 insurance company and the company CEO in federal court action regarding the alleged mishandling of an underlying state court claim’s settlement negotiations – the representation resulted in a dismissal of the clients from the lawsuit at the Motion to Dismiss stage.
Represented a large Pittsburgh-area municipality at trial before a Board of Commissioners involving a boundary dispute over the recently built Shell Cracker Plant with tens of millions of dollars of tax revenue at issue, obtaining a favorable judgment.
Represented a local Pittsburgh municipality in an internal investigation into alleged police misconduct that received local news coverage.
Defended an Air Force veteran in what is believed to be Pennsylvania’s first UAS-related felony jury trial in the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas. After a week-long jury trial that focused on forensically extracted UAS data, the case resulted in a defense verdict.
Represented numerous individuals in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigations relating to Part 47, 48, 107, and various alleged CFR/TFR violations.
Counseled numerous businesses and municipalities in their use of UAS/UAV technology for commercial purposes.

In Corey’s time outside the firm, he is an avid outdoorsman. He enjoys backcountry hiking, camping, fly fishing, skiing, and hunting. He is a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation which aims to enhance conservation efforts across the nation. He also coaches the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Mock Trial Team for tournaments across the country and helps teach Trade Secret Law at the Duquesne University Kline School of Law.
